In a scene that was repeated
countless times throughout the war, a Color Sergeant is
struck down in the midst of rallying his unit. A constant
force on the front, a Regimental officer is hit through
the thigh, and, while being supported by one of his men,
he grabs the color from the dying sergeant ti bring his
men in order. Such were the officers and men of the Army
of Northern Virginia. The men would recognize their Regimental
Color, and fight for it's honor, regardless of the personal
risks involved. |

It was said of the tenacious
General U..S. Grant, that compassion for his foes was
remarkable when he dictated the terms for surrender. One
of the few stipulations in the terms was to stack arms
and surrender the precious and glorius Battle flags that
now were as full of scars as they were of battle honors.
This last sculpture depicts that moment when the flag
is furled for the last time: some stained with hero's
blood, all stained with tears, none stained with dishonor. |
