The finest,most efficient
and oldest Louisiana military unit, the Washington Artillery
of New Orleans was not surpassed by any organization in
the South. From First Manassas to Appomattox, they gave
service equal to their elite status. Refusing to endure

Wading across one of the innumerable
streams and creeks encountered on the march, this soldier

Rifle, it was considered to be the most attractive of
American military firearms. It was a
favorite of the Confederate infantry and cavalry alike
for it’s deadly accuracy. |

The 1st Kentucky brigade was
organized in the summer of 1861. Kentucky, however, remained
loyal to the Union. The brigade became exiled and trained
in Tennessee. Never to return to Kentucky, it was nicknamed
‘the Orphan Brigade.’ Covering itself with
honors at Shiloh, Corinth, Stones River and Chickamaugua,
the brigade was one of the last units in the east to surrender
in Georgia, in May of
1865. |

Rural Missourians under the
leadership of their Governor fought as “orphans”,
separated from their occupied state and ultimately defending
Atlanta from the relentless Union onslaught. Early in
the war these troops made do with partial or no uniforms,
and antiquated weapons, such as the Model 1816 Musket
converted to percussion from its original flintlock ignition.
