Four regiments of Mississippians made up the brigade of Infantry commanded by Brigadier General William Barksdale. On July 2, 1863, this brigade received orders to attack Union positions on the Emmitsburg Road just south of the town of Gettysburg. As impatient as his commanding officer, this soldier shows the
grim determination which gave this brigade the reputation as one of the toughest veteran fighting units in the confederacy.

A 2nd Lieutenant of the 1st Maryland Battalion waves his men on at Culp’s Hill, Gettysburg, with the battalion’s mongrel mascot dog leading the way. The small unit never wavered and the brave men pushed forward until they had passed through enemy lines or had fallen dead or wounded. The 1st Maryland Battalion lost more than half their men in this deadly assault.

A corporal drinks from a tin drum type canteen offered to him by a comrade in arms. Quartermaster reports show that this unit suffered a serious shortage of canteens early in 1863. Long after the economic shell jacket had become commonplace, Georgia continued to provide frock coats to some of their troops.
This soldier is carrying fifty rounds of ammunition in an imported English Enfield cartridge box.

Known as the Mississippi Rifle, it was considered to be the most attractive of American military firearms. It was a
favorite of the Confederate infantry and cavalry alike for it’s deadly accuracy.

on this rocky hill just south of the town of Gettysburg.

The 1st Kentucky brigade was organized in the summer of 1861. Kentucky, however, remained loyal to the Union. The brigade became exiled and trained in Tennessee. Never to return to Kentucky, it was nicknamed ‘the Orphan Brigade.’ Covering itself with honors at Shiloh, Corinth, Stones River and Chickamaugua, the brigade was one of the last units in the east to surrender in Georgia, in May of
1865.

Rural Missourians under the leadership of their Governor fought as “orphans”, separated from their occupied state and ultimately defending Atlanta from the relentless Union onslaught. Early in the war these troops made do with partial or no uniforms, and antiquated weapons, such as the Model 1816 Musket converted to percussion from its original flintlock ignition.
