Derived from the field expedient grave markers of WWII and Korea, this became a practice during Vietnam and the tradition continues to this day. The M-16 with its magazine housing empty, supported by a fixed bayonet in the earth. The empty boots, long a symbol of the loss of a brave defender of freedom. Major John Pelham directs a change of aim during his epic flank attack on the Union assault at Fredericksburg. Receiving the fire of dozens of Union guns, Pelham dismounted, removed his overcoat and helped the gun crew weakened by losses to enemy shelling. Pelham commanded the J.E.B. Stuart Horse Artillery and was both innovative and aggresive. Refusing orders to break off action three times, he left the field only when his ammunition was exhausted. It was General Robert E. Lee himself who reffered to the young Major in an after battle report. as "The Gallant Pelham".

By the evening of 2 May, 1863, the Army of Northern Virginia had achieved it's greatest victory. It was also witness to it's greatest tragety. In the eerie darkness of the wildernass near the Old Mountain Road, a thrice wounded Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson lies in the arms of Gen. A. P. Hill, while Captain Richard Wilbourne tends his shattered and wounded arm. Jackson, nearing shock, realizes that he has been shot by his own men, troops of the 18th North Carolina Infantry.
