Lee wrote to the Secretary of War, “The best guns for field service, in my opinion, are the 12 Pound Napoleon guns.”

New forging methods, an ordnance department drawing, and advanced production method at the Phoenix Iron Company gave birth to the 3 Inch Ordnance Rifle. "The Yankee 3 inch rifle was a dead shot at any distance up to a mile". This was said by a Confederate Gunner in 1864.Nearly a thousand of these deadly guns were made by Phoenix with astonishing speed. Highly praised if captured by the Confederacy, they could not get enough to suit their needs and attempted to copy them, but not as successfully manufactured as those made in theNorth. Hotchkiss projectiles were intended for use in the 3 Inch rifle, but Schenkle shells were also good, with Parrott shells only used in an emergency.

Item Name: 6 Pdr Field Gun
Item Number: 1955
Edition Limit: 1500
Price: $125.00

Placed in service as the model 1841 light field gun, this cannon gained fame in the Mexican War in such units as the flying artillery. This "6 pounder" made up the bulk of the Artillery batteries in the North and South at the outbreak of the Civil War. The model 1841 gun followed "Stonewall" Jackson from VMI to immortality at the Battle of Manassas in June 1861. Though quickly replaced by the "Napoleon" and iron rifled guns, the 6 pdr. was still used in great numbers in the Western theatre.
