The Army of the Potomac has
just stopped for a break in their long relentless march
along the dusty roads of Virginia, and a soldier has shed
his gear to rest a while. The tools of his trade are the
tools of war. He carries on his person everything he needs,
the most important item being a Springfield pattern 1861
rifle musket. He carries a socket bayonet, cartridge box
with the US and Eagle breastplates, scabbard and a tarred
canvas haversack and double-bag knapsack for his personal
belongings.

A Confederate soldier has
taken a short break during the long march which will lead
him to the village of Gettysburg. Like every soldier,
he carries everything he needs to survive, from his Mississippi
Rifle to his blanket roll which is wrapped in a gum blanket.
His cartridge box bears the CS on it’s flap and
his
waist belt, with a brass CSA plate holding his Confederate
manufactured cap box. He also carries a saber bayonet
and scabbard as well as a tin drum canteen and a linen
haversack to carry personal items.

A rail fence serves as a support
for a worn and tired trooper’s equipment. His waist
belt holds a cartridge box, cap box and the “teeth
of a Horse soldier’s bite”, a 44 Caliber Colt
revolver and Model 1840 “wristbreaker” saber.
A seven shot Spencer Carbine and it’s broad leather
shoulder sling complete the
collection. The trooper’s kepi with Crossed Saber
insignia sits on the fence post.

This sculpture of stacked
arms depicts the 3 tradition rifle types used by the Confederate
soldier. Setting this scene off in grand style, the artist
has designed the base as a stylized Battle flag, and is
surrounded by the names of the battles where Southern
Courage is enshrined for all time.
